How to Measure for a Storage Basket

THE COZYROOT FIELD NOTES · 01

Start with the opening, not the shelf.

A shelf may be wide, but the usable opening between its supports can be much smaller. Measure the narrowest internal width, depth and height. Watch for a back panel, trim, hinges or a shelf lip that reduces the space.

Write down three measurements.

Record width from side to side, depth from front to back and height from the shelf surface to the underside above. For floor storage, measure the footprint beside the furniture and check that the basket will not block a door or walking path.

Allow space for your hands.

A basket should come out easily. Leave room above the rim to reach in or lift a handle, and compare the widest point of a rounded basket with your opening. Handles can extend beyond the body. If the page does not show the measurement you need, ask before buying.

Match the shape to the contents.

Rectangular baskets often sit neatly on shelves. Round, open baskets work well for a throw beside a chair. A taller hamper uses vertical space for clothing, while a low basket lets you see smaller items without digging.

Check how it opens.

A removable lid needs somewhere to go. A hinged lid needs clearance above and behind. A tilt-out cabinet or drawer needs room in front. Use a piece of paper or tape on the floor to visualize the footprint before choosing a cabinet.
